Afrin Shall Repeat the Epic of Kobani!

Afrin Shall Repeat the Epic of Kobani!

On January 20, 2018, the fascist government of Turkey continued its crimes by officially announcing that it would attack Afrin to wipe out “PKK terrorists” and ISIS. The despotic and criminal government is trying to deviate the public opinion at home and abroad by tying ISIS to the area, while it is well known that this brutal group has almost completely abandoned Syria, and is especially absent from Afrin and its surrounding areas. Most importantly, according to authentic sources, Erdogan’s government has been one of the staunchest supporters of ISIS, and Turkish forces were fighting alongside ISIS during the Kobani attacks. At least the long time close ties of Turkey with the murderous Gulbuddin, famously known as the “butcher of Kabul”, shows that this despotic government supports the most reactionary forces. In addition, Erdogan’s bloodthirsty government has armed and financed former ISIS fighters under the Free Syrian Army, and let them loose upon the suffering people of the area, along with the official Turkish forces. The Ikhwani government of Turkey which has held a longtime hostility towards the oppressed Kurdish people, does not want them to live in peace and comfort with freedom and justice, and this is why it continues to conspire against them using violence and terror.

Abdullah Ocalan, the imprisoned leader of the Kurdish fighters, had warned everyone about Afrin three years ago saying, “Today is not the day to build textile workshops, it is the day to build workshops for arms and ammunition, to create war communism and to root it in society.” Today this prediction has become a reality and this fight can only be responded with struggle.

The bright history of the Kurdish people is filled with struggle and resistance against religious and non-religious reactionary, and after the epic resistance of Kobani, which enriched their experience, they have not sat in silence and took their fate into their own strong hands. The Kurdish-inhabited city of Afrin is part of three cantons in Syria (Afrin, Kobani, and Jazira) that is autonomously administered under the Democratic Union Party (PYD) and has been relatively secure since 2012. People of other ethnicities like Arabs, Turkmen, Assyrians, Yazidis, Armenians, Aramis, and Chechens, also live in the area. Today, the Syrian Democratic Forces, made up of YPG fighters and people of other ethnicities, especially Arabs, are standing by each other in defense of Afrin. The inhabitants of Afrin, even elderly women, have taken up arms and are heroically fighting against the armed-to-the-teeth Turkish army and ISIS.

Kurdish fighters have a right to use the internal conflicts of world powers in their interest, but they should not be deceived by the friendship of the warmonger US government because the history of this superpower is filled with crimes and treachery against freedom-seeking movements. If the US apparently and for its regional interests, has defended the Kurds, it does not mean that it will not stab them in the back some day, just like today it has simply stated that it is “worried” about Turkey’s savage attacks and done nothing else. The people of Afghanistan have a bitter and bloody experience of the US’s criminal-fostering and intervention in our country, the result of which is the disasters that are ongoing in our country for the past four decades.

Only the brave struggle of the Kurdish people, who face the advanced Turkish army with a strong will and commitment, can rub the snouts of these criminals in the dirt. People who rise up and are united, and have brave women in their ranks like Avesta Khabur, who sacrificed herself to blow up a Turkish tank, cannot be defeated. Just like the conscientious people of the world stood by the historic resistance of Kobani, today, they shall not leave Afrin alone either, because a just and progressive struggle will always have the support of progressive elements and groups from around the world.

We send our warmest salutations to the resistors in Afrin and stand by them!
